Wild swimming

Wild swimming is a great way to just get outdoors and enjoy the bracing fresh air and cool waters of our coast, rivers, lakes, inlets and pools.  I didn’t realise until recently that my morning cravings in Concarneau (to swim to the buoys on the beach in front of our holiday home) was actually a recognised sport (ok not yet at Olympic status but you never know!).  Now based in Cornwall for a week, those cravings have returned and so on Day 2 of our holiday here we headed off in search of a perfect Cornish ramble and swim

Courtesy of 13 year old cousin Ashley, we had rather an interesting expedition to a cove somewhere between Trevean and Prussia Cove.  Needless to say, the muddy conditions, the stinging nettles and the overhanging hedgerow did nothing to convince the Dutch contingent (of which my kids firmly placed allegiance along with my Hubbie!) that the beaches were beautiful or the scenery stunning.  And it rained.  However we still managed to get into the water (my main aim as I am missing all my early morning swims in Concarneau) and it wasn’t that cold, I swear!

After a few days of rain, the sun started to break through on Saturday, so I took the opportunity to get the gang out in the water again, but this time soothed their souls by offering the Jubilee Pool in Penzance.  This is not cheating, I hasten to add, as the Jubilee Pool is a sea water lido built in 1935 on the seafront in Penzance.  Its almost 100m wide in parts, so perfect for distance lengths or circular swimming, and has a fabulous retro outdoor feel to it.  Plus it brings back fab memories of my mis-spent youth hanging out here with the boys!  I loved it, and was a happy little seal swimming lengths for 30 minutes.  My only moan was the ‘health and safety’ police, who don’t allow diving, jumping, kids that don’t swim without a parent (standing right next to them in 80cm of water!), and photography!!  Come on Cornwall County Council -> make the place fun and the families will swarm back!!

If you have time, grab a bite at the pool cafe next door, Poolside Indulgence.  The fish of the day (calamari) was delicious, the kids happy and well fed, and the glass of celebratory wine after my swim went down a treat!
