Day 209 – Gateau breton

I have been struggling this holiday to get motivated in the kitchen.  Actually to get motivated at all, at times.  I have even once or twice taken over the male domain of the BBQ (shock horror!) after realising in the first week, that sans Hubbie means you have to DIY!

So it was lovely to see the Boys this afternoon, get into the Girls domain for a change and tackle a cake recipe from my ‘cuisine de Bretagne’ french cookbook, chosen by my son as it’s his favourite cake to eat from the bakery in Foret Fousenant.

We used up the last of our chicken eggs that Hubbie had brought down from Brussels, and a few simple ingredients out of the cupboard.

A great simple little cake, that was really easy, even by the Boys standards!  Must let go of the BBQ tongs and get back in the kitchen sometime soon!

Gateau Breton

  • 150g melted butter
  • 200g flour
  • 125g powdered sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 egg yolk

Preheat the oven to 180 deg.

In a bowl, beat the 2 eggs together, and add the sugar.  Mix well with a fork.  Add the butter, and then beat in the flour slowly.

Pour the mixture into a small flan tray, 3cm deep.  Spread the egg yolk over the top, and then make a pattern using a fork.

Cook in the oven for 35 to 40 minutes.

La Foret Fouesnant was the first place I ever holidayed in Brittany (years ago, with my parents) but we have been back several times since. Such a pretty place.
This Gateau Breton looks so much like the ones we have seen and eaten in Brittany. I shall be having a go at your recipe sometime – complete with the authentic looking fork marks! Sometimes you see versions with jam (though that might be Gateau Basque): have you tried it that way?
… and what are the details of the cookbook please, although I know it is in French?!

  2. will have to wait til I’m back next weekend, as the cookbook is in Brittany and I’m in Brussels…..but will keep you posted! Not tried it with jam, sounds interesting!
    Thanks for following the blog
    take care

Think it might be Gateau Basque that has the jam in it – but it was a very similar recipe. I’d be grateful for the book info when you can supply it.) Good to see Concarneau again, as well as mention of La Foret Fouesnant – lucky you to have a bolthole there!

Check out what others are saying...
